Isabelle,
Sorry for the delay, I was looking for the directions for driving. I have a
daytrippping folder and just need to tidy up that folder. It is so humid
today. We have had a storm, thunder, lightning and rain. It was about time
for some rain here.
This is my note from the last trip:
Storey's Nursery
M-S 8-5
Sun. 9-5
Route 67W off Route 32, Freehold, New York
We have not been down this summer so maybe you want to check all is the same.
I have this number. ( 1-518/634-7754)
This was worth a trip every spring until all the Mass. places began to expand
and many garden centers now carry better plants. We also used to drive even
further down to Matterhorn Nursery, 227 Summit Park Road, Spring Valley, NY
(1-914/354-5986).
Everything ordinary was already planted on this farm so I got interested in
every plant that appeared in some new article and went out hunting. I
raised a lot of plants from seed also. I do pretty good with cuttings as
well. it was the best thing I could have done with my retirement years. I
have met a lot of people and learned many new things - keeps the brain
active. I am an ex-biologist, sent to work by accident in bio-chem and kept
there so I used to fiddle with the plants in the hospital lab. I taught
myself some botany while working nights. It has been very satisfying to me.
Daytimes I was part of the family construction company. In the hospital, I
always did ERwork or fill-ins so was never full-time but did have much spare
time in the middle of the night when nothing was happening. Sometimes
nothing happened all night so we dissected bulbs and learned about the bud
formation. I am really happy I got interested, I should have taken courses
in this field. My parents thought I ought to get a job so I was sort of set
on a course that ended in employment.
I have a collection of dwarf and species pelargoniums for the winter plant
room, sort of a glassy conservatory. I did cuttings from all of them and am
now up to the elbows in pelargonium plants. We are getting to the point
where we have to consider carefully what we add, the amount of energy we have
is not going to increase.
Hope you get today's rain,
Claire Peplowski
