Rain

Bill,

Did you get your rain yet?

It looks about to come at us again right now. There has been no sun all day
and it is quite cool. All of those rain barrels are full and we still have
overly wet soil in a few places. You can feel rain in the air. This thing
called the jetstream is north of you this year. When a writer around the
northern part of the Great Lakes area says rain or heat or whatever, this
year we are getting about the same two days later.

When you said your water truck had not arrived, I expect it you are quite
worried in your household. You need to buy some of those 5 gallon gasoline
containers just in case. Because there were hand dug wells around here
before the well drillers arrived, wells were alway low in August. Nearly
every old house in this town has a sign in the bathroom reading "3 pees and a
flush". I have seen many of these, still in use. Some others are a bit
coarser.

If you noticed the bulb list messages, especially those from Australia,
drought is being complained of there as well as here. A gardener notices
these things more than folks who like beaches. We are still low from
previous years with reservoirs in this area though no problems are being
experienced around here except nasty and sometimes sneaky raises in water
rates.

You really have to go through the bills to figure our how they do it. You
pay so much for the first number of gallons, more for the next lot, less
further on and up and down and confusing. This is how it is working on some
of the buildings Ed still has and a few he is managing.

Also the power company here has been sold to an Irish conglomerate called The
National Grid. They don't generate any power. Nobody really knows anymore
who generates power. We buy, according to our Public Service Commission,
power from Quebec Hydro. They have lots and we just pay. You pay separately
for power, delivery of the power and gas and delivery of the gas. This is
called deregulation and in NYS we are now a competitive power market though
in my town there are only two choices and the price is the same from both.
We have no natural gas here so are spared that problem. If I live long
enough, I will not understand one piece of paper that crosses my desk.
