Re: dahlia question

I just stand mine on sheets of newspaper for a few days to dry out, shake loose the soil still on the bulbs and put them into open topped plastic grocery bags in the basement. I've almost never lost any, but find it may pay to check on them part way through the winter perhaps dust with garden sulphur if there are any signs of mold. Not usual because my basement is dry most winters.
As for them not blooming until August-well, neither do my helenium, and a number of other perennials, but I still think it's well worth having them in the garden. Feel the same way about dahlias, although I don't much like the big dinnerplate ones that need to be staked.

I was hoping someone would answer this question.
For several years I saved several over in my basement and never lost any.
Sorry, I didn't do anything fancy. I just left them in the pots, cut them
back and brought them into my basement where I set them on shelves or under
tables; somewhere out of the way. Quit watering them, of course, until March
sometime when they would start sprouting. My basement is about 65 to 67
degrees in the winter.

Why did I quit if its this easy? Got tired of them and very few bloomed B4
August. And I was running out of room on my patio. I think I will try a
couple more next summer again. ;-)
