I'm close to that now, and I have an accounting background! (among many other
backgrounds, trails, and false starts).
No, not a drop of water yet. We last saw rain in May. And the water truck
has not yet arrived with last Friday's delivery. Yes, we let the toilet go
as long as we can stand it. The laundry was piling up on me, so I went to the
laundromat! Felt like I was back in college!
We are fairly far from being totally out of water, but we certainly have
little reserve. Our little pond cut into the hillside out in the field is
quite low, with about a foot of the rubber liner showing. I fear we're going
to lose the fish soon. We've lost two dwarf conifers so far. I'm ready to
throw two flats of still unplanted annuals on the compost heap--I've been
giving them a brief morning watering, but they just can't tolerate the little
cell packs any longer.
But we do have slightly cooler weather, so the plants aren't also being
scorched by that intense sun we were getting--I could feel waves of heat
whenever I walked in the field.
Next week I take off for Seattle for the Garden Writers annual convention.
Heronswood is one of the featured tours, so I'm certainly looking forward to
that; wish Dan were also speaking in one or more of the sessions. I have a
friend who visited there last month and said it was spectacular--I've only
seen it in early April. I expect this to be the highlight of the trip.
