Hello Donna
IF you use care, you can divide them in bloom. If I want to do it and preserve the scapes, I soak each clump , individually for 2-3 hours and then sit down and plan to get dirty as I gently pry the fans apart. So to the daylily folks on the list. When is the best time to divide them? I was thinking the fall when they are done blooming, but maybe spring is better? Actually I was thinking of tomorrow, since they are crowding out everything... but they are in bud or flowering here, so that's not going to work.
I've seen some one wield a large knife and basically cut the root ball apart. It works, but I'd worry about introducing infection. Or cutting myself!
I have divided and replanted from April until October. Just keep them watered!
