My seedlings are on their 2nd year from moving them
away from mama plant into pots. Last winter I
protected them from winter wet with a leaning old
glass window--there were several plants I moved into
this "not really a cold frame" (clematis volunteers,
columbine, rose starts) and I got about a 70% live
thru the winter.
I know helleborus does not like to be moved a lot, so
I planted them into gal. pots of pearlite, peat and
garden soil.
Here in wet oregon, it doesn't take much to drown out
our plants-but since I seldom get bad freezing winters
on the west side of town (aka the banana belt) I've
had heaps of success with this method.
We are in the process of, perhaps, being bought out by
a developer who has purchsed the property on 2 sides
of my 75 year old cottage and is negotiating with the
owners on the 3rd side, leaving my acre in the middle
of subdivision hell. I was hoping, at first, to take
heaps of plants with me but lately have been
collecting seeds and seedlings instead, flaging
specific plants that I want but realizing that I can't
realistically move and store everything!!.
Since the purchase is in the 'iffy' stage-I won't sell
if they don't give me what I want for my property---,
and since I haven't a clue where we will be moving to,
or if we will be staying here and getting a new place
in afore mentioned subdivision hell, I am getting more
inclined to just call friends in the gardening world
locally and say come and dig and take home when and if
the time comes---this is so hard to deal with!
Seeds and cuttings are much easier to store than huge
plants!
