Took my climbing hydrangea a good 10 years and a heart-to-heart
discussion about compost heaps to bloom (literally bloomed for the
first time the year after I told it that next year was it...bloom or
compost); now it covers a 16+/- foot tall black locust stump with
arms stretched out some 3' or more; blooms yearly - but these are NOT
fast growers nor early bloomers....worth waiting for IMO.
Got the neatest form last year, Hydrangea anomala subsp.
'Tillifolia', - has minute leaves about an inch or so long. Planted
at the base of a large oak in a raised bit I'd made for a rhodo, it
headed right for the tree and now is about 2' up the trunk. No
blooms, but I'd grow it even if it never bloomed; cute as a bug's
ear:-)
Don't really think these are "instant gratification" type plants,
myself:-)
