Re: staking / rebar

 Hello!
Rebar sounds great....my only worry is the heat it takes on and if that
affects the plants that grow up them?

  Hi Susan,

I've actually been using rebar for staking recently.
It doesn't break off in the soil like stakes often will
and pretty much blends in with everything.

That sounds like it's worth a try. Guess I'll want the cutting and bending
tools as well. I saw a photo in a garden magazine that showed rebar as a
criss-cross arbor, but the rebar was very evident (not covered) and not
particularly attractive. The key must be to grow a vine that will cover it
  entirely, as you mentioned.

Alyce, these young "whips" don't "root" when
stuck in soil? I have had this happen on occasion,
but maybe it is our moist springs.

I'm certain this will happen with hybrid poplar branches! But those I have
in the ground are intended for temporary use. I hope those on the clematis
poles last the summer; I'm not too satisfied with staples for securing them
to the post so will try something else next year. Those woven on the arbor
I'm spending more time on -- trying for a simple pattern -- and I hope it
lasts a lot longer! I have to finish it before the two clematis and the
porcelain berry reach the upper part of the arbor!

Thanks for the rebar tip. I've seen it used in gardens (photos) but had
not thought of using it for staking -- a good use. I've already asked my
husband to please pick up some rebar for me. That was fun.
