Re: monarch butterflies

We live a mile from the tiny town, and about 100 miles from NYC, in the
mountains; there is no business in the neighborhood, except across the
road is a field which is usually planted with corn, except this year
they let it go to grass, and are harvesting that now;

but since the weather turned warm, every so often there is the smell of
insect repellent throughout the area, quite strong, quite "chemical",
not the usual pleasant odor of the countryside.

I don't know where it comes from, but this sort of thing could be the
reason there is a drop in the number of butterflies, hummingbirds, etc.,
that we've been discussing. I find it terribly disturbing.
