Hi everyone,
I recently accidentally acquired some Clematis montana 'Tetrarose'
for my nursery, meaning to purchase a different plant instead.
I like C. montana and had considered carrying it, but there seems to
be a great deal of confusion about its hardiness. One supplier lists
it as zone 2, another lists it as 5, another lists it as 6, and so on.
The UK book 'Clematis' by Charles Cheshire lists it as a zone 7 plant,
as does the new Timber Press book, 'An Illustrated Encyclopedia of
Clematis'. Rehder listed it as zone 6, but Bean says that it is
'quite hardy' and a native to the Himalayas. In the more recent
'Index of Garden Plants' by Mark Griffiths it's listed as a zone 6
plant.
One site says that it's root hardy to zone 5, but not necessarily bud
bud hardy. They recommend a northern exposure to reduce damage from
late winter thawing and freezing.
So...
What are your experiences? Who's right?
Chris
