When I heard the humming of carpenter ants inside the house years ago I
called a professional service. She located the nest and took care of it but
she also told me that the brickmoulding to the garage door was rotten and
that I should treat the area every month with...can't remember the name.
She also explained that they usually have satellite nests which should also
be treated. Mine was a streetside maple tree. Things are under control
for me in those two sites, but this backyard one is new. I think it could
have to do with a neighbor's backyard tree that's been dead for several
years. Anyway, Tom, if you do succeed in getting them out of your house, be
sure to check around for other nests.

"There are two types of carpenter ant nests: parent colonies and satellite
colonies. Parent colonies contain workers, numerous broods and an egg-laying
queen, while satellite colonies may have workers, mature larvae and pupae"
and "To eliminate the ants, the parent and the satellite nests must be found
and eliminated." And " carpenter ants found inside a home can be either
advance troops from the main colony outside the house or members of an
interior satellite colony."

BTW, everyone, thanks for your support; apparently I'm not alone in this
problem. As to whether I'm going to lose the tree, I guess I'll try
checking with the County Extension Service.

I have used Terro (boric acid), Amdro (hydramethylnon) and Combat (fipronil)
-- taping traps to the side of the house, squeezing goo on and dripping
liquid down the walls. The two columns of black ants continue to climb the
exterior walls, and I see a few inside. They also bite. Very frustrating and
irritating!
