Thanks for the cornmeal tip.  I will try it in garden.  The Windex does not kill the large black ants and they really turn over the soil there.  Anyway, it will be interesting to try it and it will not hurt the other insects but bet the raccoons get it first.  Nancy Robinson

Nancy....here are some natural ways to get rid of carpenter and odorous ants. Some I know are effective. Scroll way down to read all of it. The blog at the bottom of the page offers even more solutions. Good luck!

I have used Terro (boric acid), Amdro (hydramethylnon) and Combat (fipronil) -- taping traps to the side of the house, squeezing goo on and dripping liquid down the walls.  The two columns of black ants continue to climb the exterior walls, and I see a few inside. They also bite. Very frustrating and irritating!
