I can't find the original post but here goes an answer from zone 5.  If you
must and have the time, go ahead and hand pick the buggers from you favorite
plants.  You won't have much impact and they probably will not do much harm.
You will feel better 'tho.

Do not use traps and dop not spray.  The traps attract them from far away
and they will lay eggs in "your" yard.  The sprays kill more beneficial
insects than beetles.  

The key is to treat your lawn after they have laid eggs and the newly
hatched grubs are are chewing ferociously on your grass roots.  In my area
the best time to  treat with diazinon is late August to mid September. Check
with your local Extension Service to determine the best time in your area.

I detest diazinon but limit its use to once every five years when lawn
damage is evident.
