Hellebores can be propagated from seed but the seed must be fresh; it is
possible to get some germination from stored seed but the chances are that
you will not get a very high percentage rate of germination. Sow fresh seed
into compost in a pot (30 seeds into a 16cm pot, with about 2cm space
between each seed)and then cover with 12mm grit; water (from below) then
stand outside in a shady place (ideally, on grit in a cold frame. Keeping a
humid microclimate round the seeds will assist germination. Ideally, sowing
is best done by mid-July but, if you can get hold of some seed, try a.s.a.p.
Seeds should germinate before Christmas.
