Re: Michauxia tchihatchewii (sp)
Dear Katherine:
Originally I purchased the seeds for growing Michauxia tchihatchewii in
my sunroom; too many seeds germinated so I planted them outside where
they flourished. They bloom for a very long period during their second
year, mid summer to frost. The seed heads further extend the season
into winter. They did not self sow. As to hardiness they're hardy in
my zone 6 Montana garden, Alplains grows them in Kiowa, CO, zone 3.
Since England's Thompson & Morgan list at zone 8, Germany's Jelitto &
Schacht zone 7 the determining factor for hardiness is probably winter
wet rather than low temperatures. If you live in a wet winter area grow
Michauxias in your raised gravel beds along with Eremurus and Lewisia
redivia.
When Michauxia blooms you'll truly see why it's a member of the
Campanulaceae family. Even though it's a coarser looking than Campanula
it's the plant that all visitors inspected first.
Best, Vicki
