Janice,
Starting perennials from seed is fun, cheap, and rewarding, but some
perennials, especially those with variegated foliage, will only come true
from cuttings vs. seeds. Plus, your better mail order companies will have
a wide variety of offerings beyond the common selections at a reasonable
price. I'm thinking of Busse Gardens, Milaegers, Plant Delights (I think
that's their name -- they specialize in variegated foliage), etc. All of
their addresses have been mentioned on this list before.
The only seed companies that offer a large variety of options is Thompson &
Morgan and Chilterns (sp?) that I know of. Be aware that a lot of the
perennials you may drool over have very specialized requirements for the
seeds to germinate. Might be worth your while to check out the plants on
these and save the common varieties for your seed flats.
