hollyhocks

I hope this won't be a repeat of an earlier post which I think hasn't been
published:

I've been growing hollyhocks (singles) for some years now successfully;

this year they're coming up robustly, but a lot of the big leaves started
turning rusty; I thought the blossoms were all right, but now that they're
growing separate, many of them are turning brown and dropping off if touched;

what has happened? is it a function of the wet weather we've been having?
