Jeanne:
Try giving them some high phosphorus fertilizer. Maybe Miracle Gro
10-30-10. Any liquid fertilizer with the middle number high should work.
Mine have been blooming now for a month. I tried this a week before the
garden club was to tour my garden and it worked well.
Also, if you look on your color wheel (excellent tool for designing
gardens), you will see that purple and orange work well together. You might
want to put in some tall artemesia, ie., Valerie Finnis, or Silver Brocade
interspersed around to harmonize. I expect the pinks are a little caustic
mixed in however, flowers are lovely no matter their color. I use the
plastic ribbon that contractors use to mark mine. Just tie it around the
stems and when the plant dies back, you will still have a marker around the
one you want to dig. I use a black magic marker and write the color of the
plant on it and then I know where to put it.
I do understand your frustration. I planted a pink/blue/lavender bed two
years ago and also had orange lilies coming up in the middle. No longer
though. Just keep on keeping on. It will come together someday. Gardens are
never "finished". There will always be something to move, divide, eradicate,
coddle, swear at, and to love and be in awe of. That is the art of
gardening. JC
