Marilyn,
I'm assuming that you are referring to oriental lilies when you mention the
fragrance of lilies. While a lovely family of flowers, not all have the
signature perfume. The more popular asiatics, for example, provide
wonderful bold colors, but are devoid of fragrance.
I grow the familiar "Easter" lilies and orientals for their delicious
scent, plus they hold up well in the border and vase. Try growing calamint
with your lilies. Arranges well, has a slight minty scent, and the tiny
pale lavender blossoms compliment the bold, waxy petals of the lilies. As
an extra bonus, it starts blooming at the same time as the orientals and is
just the right height in the garden to hide the stems of the lilies.
