Not necessarily.  Soil nitrogen is not available to plants all at once.  It is
slowly released as soil microorganisms break it down into forms plants can
use.  

Many nitrogen fertilizers are fast-release, meaning they have nitrogen in
forms readily usable by plants.  So plants get a "big gulp". And that is a big
difference.  --Janis
