Re: Astilbe and flower arrangements

Ever tried using their foliage in flower arrangements? They are great and
last nie on forever. Same goes for hosta leaves. I use mainly the small
leafed ones. Great for concealing the edges of vases. Hosta leaves also
look good with astilbe blossoms.

I don't think you can beat a well-grown astible. The foliage stands up
well, (with adequate moisture and not too much sun), the texture can't be
beat, there are so many heights and colors, etc. that I just can't see not
using them. I have a bed with nothing but hosta, astilbe and variegated
false solomon's seal in the center. Pretty stunning!

Flower arrangements have become one of my favorite tools for figuring what
looks good together. We went to 3 4th of July parties and I took the
arrangements for all of them. I had the best time mixing and matching
things. Some of the combos were: blue hydrangeas with gloriosa lilies with
gooseneck loosestrife with Hydrangea 'Annabelle', with fireworks of
agapanthus (blue and white). Reds from crocosmia and monarda. Foliage came
from a variegated weigelia (can't think of the name at the moment), nandina,
astilbe, cotinus and a variety of grasses. I threw in a bunch of daylilies,
but only stalks that had lots of buds on them. Hosta flowers added yet
another blue (well, more purple, actually). Had rave reviews and a lot of
fun to boot.
