How could I forget the 'cherry pie' plant (heliotrope)! While it is an
annual, it is well worth the effort to grow this plant. The fragrance is
like almond extract and the bloom clusters are a deep velvety purple. I've
seen this plant in books featuring English borders. It seems that they are
fond of combining this plant with pale pink. Grows very well in pots (keep
it watered because it wilts easily like impatients) but it seems to grow
better for me in the border.
I can usually find it a local nurseries, but I have also grown it from
seed. Start it very early as it takes a while to grow to blooming size.
