Julie, the coarse salt I'm thinking of is right in between table salt and
rock salt. Fine, but not as fine as flour -- maybe cornmeal?. When I got
it for free, it was very coarse as we used it in our paint formulations.
Now that I buy it from the nursery, it is finer than that.
I have no idea why it hasn't worked for you. I've had to use it many times
this spring because it was very damp and cool and the slugs were doing a
number on my crambe. Once I sprinkled the stuff around the plants, I
didn't have any other troubles. I put maybe a 1" wide circle around each
plant I want to protect with no soil showing through the circle to give you
an idea of how thick it should be. I reapply every time it rains.
No doubt you were doing this. If so, I don't have another answer. Sorry!
Maybe the slugs here in KY are a little less ferocious than those in CA.
