Yes, cleome does smell skunky.  That's why Linda Wallpe posted here or on
another group that it helps deter deer.  So I immediately planted a bedful and
the deer stayed away from that area as near as I can tell.  Of course they say
what repels a deer one year doesn't work the next, but so far the self -seeded
cleome have helped with the deer two more years.  Now I wouldn't be without
it.
