The ultimate control of Japanese Beetles is to encourage birds in your
yard. They will eat the grubs that bear the beetles. However, the best
chemical control until I get the bird in is to spray Liquid Sevin. It must
be done frequently and not when bees are on the plants. (early mornings).
It is more lasting and safer than the dust. You can control it better and
it isn't as airborne. Try not to spray it directly on the blooms, unless
they are being eaten alive.
Here the beetles attack all of my hibiscus, tropical, hardy and altheas,
Roses and crepe myrtles.
Research on traps shows you only get a small percentage of beetles and do
nothing to stop them from coming to your plants.
