I have lots of birds (don't feed any of them), squirrels, chipmunks, garter
snakes, and toads. I don't have any kids, dogs, and NO SLUGS. I don't use
any chemicals in the yard. I fertilize with fish emulsion, compost and
manure. If something seems to be eating my plants, I spray with plain soap
and water. Maybe I am a naive newbie, but cutting open the bellies of slugs
with gritty material, throwing them in the road to be run over by cars or
spreading chemicals that will eventually be the destruction of this planet
as we know it, is not my cup of tea. If my plants can't survive in the
environment that I provide for them, then I need to find other plants. This
is not meant to offend anyone - just my opinion.
