That is a superstition going back to, I believe, at least the 17th
century...but, then, they also thought night air was harmful and kept
windows tightly closed; they also thought bathing wasn't good for you.
Your friend's husband is a living "old wives tale":-) - as well as a bully.
Too bad your friend is not able (for whatever reasons) to tell him exactly
where to get off.
