Susan, Penstemon start easily from cuttings now through September in our
8b PNW climate. Take tip cuttings with 2 sets of leaves early in a.m.
Remove bottom set of leaves and cut stem off 1/2" below this node. Dip in
rootone and stick in moistened 1/2 Perlite, 1/2 Vermiculite. Water in well
and keep it damp. Set your pot or flat in a warm place out of direct sun.
You should have root in 4-8 weeks. Transplant to pots or into the garden
when root ball is 1/2 dollar size. I don't know how hardy 'Purple Passion'
is, some of the Penstemons are very tender. But, I can vouch for 'Blue
Midnight', a nice deep blue/purple that has persisted in my garden for 5+
years. (Hybrid) Penstemons are not difficult to start from seed but some of
the species Penstemons require stratification.
