Hi, Neens,
I have had similar but spotty problems caused by moles and/or chipmunks
tunneling under plants.  They like those nice beds just as well as the
plantings do, because good soil conditions attract earthworms.  Plants only
look like they're in soil,  the roots are hanging out in dry air.
