Actually, I think it's a moth - I once knew the name . . . .but it
escapes me. It hovers at my tall purple phlox, has a long proboscis, and
a tail like a lobster??? First time I saw it, I was thrilled to see a
hummingbird . . . .ah well. . . live and learn.

I've seen only one of these in my life, but you are right, it is a moth. I
believe, not having the time to go look it up right now, that it is in the
hawkmoth family.... Pretty cool insect. The honeybees used to be numerous
all over, but there numbers are so low that some folks think that they are
extinct in the wild. That may be why the bumblebees seem more common.
