Does a hydrangea like wet feet?

Growing up in rural SE North Carolina our home had the most gigantic blue
hydrangeas one has ever seen.........they were located off a screened porch
where the roof was at a 45 degree angle and all the rain water poured down
right in the middle of the shrub! Our soil was a sandy loam and the
hydrangeas had to be cut back every year for they would get 5ft tall......and
I have never seen such huge beautiful flowers on any hydrangea since.
Remember...this is zone 8 and the soil is a sandy loam.

I have 2 of my hydrangeas located in wet areas and they are my best performers
but not like Mom's years ago!
