plants dying

Hi all.
I can relate to those of you whose plants just died (was it sedum and
leopard's bane?) I weeded and watered a small but healthy clethra
hummingbird last Friday and today it's toast. crispy. fried. And
the clethra 2 feet away is just fine. Any idea what's happening?
