RE: Buddeia bush -Reply

Hi Cheryl:

Would I be guessing right that this Buddeia
bush is what I refer to as a
Butterfly bush?

Yes.

If so, my question is, can I cut it back (right to
the
ground or close to) early every spring (or in the
fall?) to control the
size of the bush.

Works for me, this is what I do. You can also
"limb them up" to make more of a tree shape, if
desired.

So, can I have a Butterfly Bush (buddeia)
and keep it trimmed to not more than 4 feet
and still enjoy plentiful
blooms?

Works for some varieities. Definitely doesn't
work with White Bouquet! Mine is about
10-15' and I cut it down to about 4' and needed
a saw to do that. The dwarfs stay fairly small,
but last time I looked only came in lavender.
My Black Knight is controllable as is Pink
Delight. Sungold you could cut flush with the
earth I think and end up with a monster.

But a lovely monster ;-)
