Pat:
I can't claim to be an expert on iris, but I do have some...It's my
understanding that the plants do need to grow for awhile after bloom to
store up energy for the next season. However, the foliage doesn't die back
like bulbs and corms, and there is really no reason to cut it back unless it
starts looking shabby. I rarely cut mine back at all, although I have seen
recommendations that the spent flower stalks be cut off. In fact, I totally
ignore mine, except to pull the grass out about once a year, and to divide
after a few years when they get too crowded.
Hope that helps!
