RE: Campanula 'Kent Bells'

Hi Val,
For some of the taller varieties that have that lovely, full, blousy
cottage garden look such as C. 'Lodden Anna', I put tomato cages over them
in spring. They work equally well right side up or upside down. For the
taller varieties that have heavier pendulous flowers such as C. 'Kent Belle'
and C. 'Cherry Bells, I use green rubber coated metal stakes with a loop at
the top. I use these for the tall oriental and trumpet lilies too. The
trick is to push the stem into the loop before it gets too fat for the
opening. I tried some hoops with a grid top over my peonies and delphiniums
for the first time this year and they worked great for the peonies but were
too short for the delphiniums. I'll probably go back to using 6' bamboo
stakes for the delphs next year. It is interesting that you grow your
Campanulas in full sun and I grow mine in part shade (because that's mostly
what I have) and they both grow and bloom well. I even have a low ground
cover type that grows and blooms under shrubs in total shade. It just shows
are wonderfully versatile they are.

Marilyn,

since you collect campanulas perhaps you could answer a question for me.
All of my taller campanulas flop (several varieties), even though they're
in full sun. I've tried hoops to keep them upright, but they tend to lean
to one side of the hoop and bunch up. Very unattractive. I've tried
staking individually, but that's tedious and makes it hard to deadhead.
What method do you use to keep your campanulas upright? Pea staking?
Grids?

By the way, my 'Kent Bells' bloomed this year. The size and color of the
blooms were exquisite. It just didn't bloom long enough for me.
