Hi, all -- a few comments on the alliums thread. I got some
assorted allium seeds from a friend about three years ago, plus a
seed list from The Onion Man (?) -- Mark or Mike somebody who appears
to be an allium expert and provides an enormous seed list. He
recommended planting the seeds in small pots with good potting soil
(I used 4 inch pots as I recall) and leaving the pots outside all
season, watering them moderately, until germination. I started them in
April or May (I think) -- about half germinated by September. I planted
the small plugs here & there and now have four good plants that bloom
nicely (a 3-foot form of garlic chives, and three late-blooming types in
rose & lavendar). They do require some patience and germination was slow
but didn't take years. For allium collectors, I guess it's worth the
trouble, as some varieties are available only from seed. The Onion
Man was supposed to begin supplying plants as well as seeds at some
point, but I've lost touch. Could not find anything through a web
search. I think he was in Massachussets?
