I have found that this is the ideal time to divide most things-but I wish to
make it clear that I am growing the plants in pots outside and I water them a
few times a week.
The ASTILBE are being divided right now and will grow nice roots this year
and be good plants next spring, Almost all the plants that I grow will
develop a good root system in warm weather faster than in spring or fall.
Just have to keep them watered-they do not look the best when divided this
time of the year-but I am going for increase -- not looks at this time of
year.
It is best to leave on as much foliage as possible and maybe cut off the
growing point only. Place the plants in some shade for the first two weeks.
The Heliopsis and Physostegia were rooted up in three weeks, and have as many
or more roots than the one's done in the spring.
For me fall is a very poor time to divvied many items because they need to
have good root systems to over winter.
I have to go- I have some Pulmonaria that need to be dug and divided and
potted to make room in the beds so they are ready for MY personal planting
season in August, I have a lot of plants I want to get in the ground this
year so it is a productive year.
Now were should I put that tall purple daylily??
