RE:how about your failures?

Susan -- what a great question!!!

A couple of years back, I got some cuttings of a ground cover called 'brass
buttons.' I don't know the botanical name, but it has feathery creeping
stems and little yellow flowers that bloom in about 2" buttons. I planted
it in an undeveloped courtyard area that I am working on converting to a
tropical garden. The area was so dusty and the soil so hard that I needed
something that would dig in to break up the soil and hold down the dust
(and not need much water). Well, it worked -- too well! The stuff is
everywhere and choking out other plants. And now that we've restuccoed our
house, the courtyard has one terra-cotta colored wall and two light yellow
walls so the bright yellow flowers look garish. I can't wait to pull it
all out. Anyone got a suggestion for a ground cover that looks tropical
but doesnt need as much water as a tropical?
