I usually rely on evergreen backdrops -- arborvitae, yews, or other
conifers (liked dwarf spruce/firs/pines) help add winter interest
while providing a good foil for other seasonal plants.
If you're really tight for space, you might want to consider a lattice
with a climbing vine as a backdrop. Actinidia arguta, Akebia quinata,
Ampelopsis arborea, Clematis virginiana, or a grape arbor could all
be possibilities. Heck, a climbing rose that only blooms in spring
could possibly do the trick.
Otherwise, you could try flowering tobacco, Canna lilies, Mexican
sunflowers, etc...
