Boy, I kknow what you mean about flopping plants.
this is the second year for my garden and last year my
Shastas took forever to bloom and when they did, they
were only about 2 ft tall and stood straight and
strong. The Well-Tended Perennial Garden says to
pinch them back (or cut them back) in May but I
figured that mine were a smaller variety and wouldn't
need it. WELL..this year they are about five feet
tall and about a month ago began to
sprawl..unfortunately they sprawled over everything
nearby and caused those plants to flop on top of the
ones next to them etc. It has been kind of like
toppling dominoes. Finally, in disgust and despair, I
went out last week and cut everything back to the
ground..the shastas, the campanula glomeratas (my
favorites) the stokesia, the balloon flowers, and the
gloxinia. I now have a garden with lovely Monarda on
one end and valerian, coreopsis and gaillardia on the
other end and 2 inch stubble in the middle. I am
considering taking a weed whacker to the whole thing
any day now.
I promise you, next year I will pinch, pinch and
pinch some more.
