Tropical hibiscus

This weekend I saw the most wonderful hibiscus! These blooms were the size
of dinnerplates and were a marvelous dark shade of crimson. Another had
white blooms with a pink picotee. Are these the tropical hibiscus? How
are they normally sold -- plant or seed? Does anyone have any experience
growing these? They seem to be be hardy in zone 6a, but it could be that
they are reseeding.
This is a MUST have for the next season!
