My "handyman" made some boxes for our deck that have some nice features.
They are cedar with exposed finger joints at the corners for strength and
style, and bottomless, dimensioned to fit a 4 foot long plastic container
inside. The ridge on top of the plastic box keeps it suspended inside of the
wooden frame so they can easily be lifted out and also help keep the wood
from splitting and rotting. I posted a picture at
http://home.att.net/~toadwort/ so you could see how they look and are
supported. The wooden supports actually are L-shaped so the curved part that
you can see (under the box) is attached to the long part of the L which is
screwed into the deck slats. Notches on top of the support keep the wooden
frame in place.
