As your brother-in-law will be repairing your window boxes, necessitating
removal of the dirt, why not consider lining the bottom of the boxes with
empty plastic 2 liter soda bottles with lids on? The soda bottles are
just about 4" in width and would relieve 1/3 of the weight but would
still allow water passage.
I've successfully used this idea in some extra deep terra cotta pots.
Some of the potting soil sifts down between the containers and plants
that are looking for extra deep root runs use this space.
