On a similar vein, I use those polystyrene 's' shapes used for
packing, and I break up the polystyrene trays my annuals come in, &
use them in the bottom of my large teracotta tubs. It also provides
good drainage ( I have a lot of alpines in tubs) and makes them light
enough for me to move. We take our soda & milk plastic bottles tothe
recycling centre, but I may hold on to some now. Thanks for the tip.

Susan:
As your brother-in-law will be repairing your window boxes, necessitating
removal of the dirt, why not consider lining the bottom of the boxes with
empty plastic 2 liter soda bottles with lids on? The soda bottles are
just about 4" in width and would relieve 1/3 of the weight but would
still allow water passage.
I've successfully used this idea in some extra deep terra cotta pots.
Some of the potting soil sifts down between the containers and plants
that are looking for extra deep root runs use this space.
