Janice,
I think you'll have better luck with the Eupatorium rugosum in a shadier
site -- it grows wild here on our dry hill in eastern Penna, zone 6. It
grows fine in dry shade, it doesn't seem to come up out in the sun. I have
never tried planting it in the garden. I do have Eupatorium coelestinum,
which is hardy ageratum, light blue, which is very nice, grows in sun,
spreads strongly, and this year, with our drought (55 out of 67 Penna.
counties have just been placed under drought emergency status) they do look
very droopy, as you said. In the past they have always been very vigorous
and self-sufficient, so I am not spending my water on them, I hope that is
not a bad decision on my part. They will both bloom towards the end of
August.
What is doing nicely in our drought: Coreopsis verticillata 'Moonbeam',
Verbena bonariensis, Sedum Vera Jameson, Berberis Crimson Pygmy (looks
healthy and rich-colored, surrounded by sick-looking perennials), purple
hyacinth bean and Castor beans with a little watering, Agastache rupestris
and Agastache cana, woolly thyme, Sedum pluricaule 'Rosenteppich',
Cleomes...I'm running out - Buddleias -- most other things just aren't
looking like themselves. I've only been gardening for three years and the
other years haven't been this dry. What are other people in this drought
area finding to be doing well?
