Joanie,
Although I get an occaisional non-variegated branch, which I immediately cut out,
I have never experienced a total reversion to plain green. This could happen if
there were a grafted plant, and the shoots were from the root stock, but I have
never heard of this technique being applied to Cornus, since they are so easy to
propagate.
I cut back hard some years (mostly I postpone until too late and it has started
sprouting), and other years, cut back about half of the branches, alternating
years/branches. I think I prefer this technique.
What can I not grow here? Anything that requires a long, hot summer and/or lots
of sun. I have somewhat solved the problem by acquiring a small, hexagonal
greenhouse (for the non-greenhouse appearance--a compromise with my husband, who
is definately not Gene ;-) ) two years ago. So I can now get an early start
and extend the growing season.
Tomorrow, we actually leave for a 3 week visit to the US (NY, PA, SF, LA and San
Diego), so will look around and see what the gardening differences really are.
