Re: July Gardens

I guess we could always refer to our July gardens as being shabby
sheek-----I've got an over abundance of foliage right now----too much rain.
During this time of the year I try to cut everything back about 1/3, however,
we are usually in the middle of a 60-75 day drought and the plants benefit
from having less foliage. This year I think I do the same just to contain
these guys and shape them up for a nice fall garden.

Usually this is the time my garden comes "in all it's glory" as I refer to
it---this year--not so. This is when it is nice to have the 'ole stand bys
planted here and there--the ever faithful lantana and hamilia (hummingbird
bush) and some of the annuals like the Brazilian bachelor button and
justicia's are doing nicely. And of course the salvia's never stop blooming.
If you haven't already incorporated salvia's into your garden - it would
something to think about for the "lag" times in the garden----they are like
the energize bunny, they keep going and going and going.

In the shade areas - the hosta's have already bloomed and gone but the toad
lily 'amethyst' is blooming like mad and the ginger's are coming into
bud.....fall should be good!!

Happy Gardening to you all
