Re: Sempervivums
I love the various sempervivums (we call them hens and chicks here). I
always toss them in the ugliest, most barren, hottest spots, and have
never been disappointed. I'd water regularly after planting (for 2
weeks or so) and then just leave them grow. I wouldn't bother changing
the soil unless you REALLY need something to do. I've found that nice
soil rots them (my experience only, not some great horticultural
experiment).
My mother-in-law grows them on rocks with a slight depression to hold a
little water. If they grow on rock, they'll grow anywhere! You might
try some of the creeping sedums too - they are shallow rooted, come in
some lovely colors, and also being succulents, look very nice with the
sempervivums.
Good luck!
