Re: Slugs in my compost heap

I often have problems with what we call "pill bugs" or "rolly pollys" in my
compost heap. These critters, like slugs and snails, tend to eat detritus
and young seedlings. They do lay eggs and even when you do hot composting,
they invade once the pile cools down, especially around the edges, so hot
composting doesn't always solve the problem. I find that these guys all
hate sun and/or dryness, so I try to spread out my finished compost to let
it dry out in a sunny spot before I spread it into the garden. Otherwise,
you might try diatomaceous earth.

Hope this helps

Nan

PS Here in southern california, we always water our compost heaps as they
dry out rapidly in our dry climate
