Sweet Potato Vine & Bamboo

Donna & Valerie-

Aren't these vines wonderful? Nice color on all three types.

Last year I planted two lime ones, one in a large pot that was very
mannerly, trailed beautifully; the other I planted directly in the
ground. It turned into the plant that ate the porch. If I had not
trimmed it back regularly, it would have covered the entire thing.

I just made cuttings, stuck them in glass jars and in less than 2 days,
they had roots. Gave them to anyone that would take them! That's how
Bill Lee ended up with a bunch, plus my mother, a sister, a
niece..............

One note about the water rooted ones, if they aren't transplanted into
dirt, they will die, unlike the real sweet potato.

At the end of the season, I dug all the tubers up, put them in slightly
damp peat moss (1 cup water to 11 cups peat moss), put them in a box in a
cold (not freezing) cellar til this spring. Planted them directly in
the ground around the garden in early June. I think they all came up,
the larger ones faster than the smaller ones.

This year I bought a 'Blackie' and a variegated one. The variegated
one is planted in semi-shade, sun until maybe 1 in the afternoon. It has
taken off in all directions. The black one is sulking. It is planted in
total shade and not at all happy. Probably wants a little sun but it has
just been too hot here to move anything including me

P.S. Kris, I think any of these sweet potato vines would look terrific
in a container with the bamboo. The lime green one would repeat the
bamboo color but be a different leaf shape. Maybe throw in one of the
smaller daylilies like Red Zinger. The 'Blackie' would be a different
shape and would look terrific with a magenta colored flower like 'Anne
Folkard'. The variegated one would come with a different leaf shape AND
color for a very soft look.
